Physical & Chemical Properties

  • Decomposes at 560oC. Copper sulphate pentahydrate loses two water molecules of hydration at 30oC, 2 more at 110oC and becomes anhydrous by 250oC.

Use proper equipment for lifting and transporting all containers. Use sensible industrial hygiene and housekeeping practices. Wash thoroughly after handling. Avoid all situations


Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place. Keep container tightly closed, and away from incompatible materials. Storage materials compatible for copper sulphate storage include stainless steel, fiberglass, polypropylene, PVC or other plastic material. Keep away from galvanized piping and nylon material.


  • As a herbicide, fungicide and pesticide. As analytical reagent in laboratories. Copper sulfate is employed in organic synthesis. Commonly used in schools in chemistry education.

  • Copper sulfate was also used in the past as an emetic. It is now considered too toxic for this use. It is still listed as an antidote in the World Health Organization’s Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification System.

  • Copper sulfate can also be used as a mordant in vegetable dyeing. It often highlights the green tints of the specific dyes.
